After handling all kicking duties for Auburn last year, sophomore Daniel Carlson gave up punting this season to try to keep his right leg fresh.
The move has already paid dividends for Carlson, who was named the SEC’s special teams Player of the Week for his performance against Louisville.
Carlson recorded six touchbacks and booted a career-long 56-yard field goal in the second quarter of the Tigers’ 31-24 victory.
“I just connected really well,” Carlson said of his field goal. “Everybody did their job up front, and the snap, hold and kick was good.”
Carlson’s kick set a Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game record for longest field goal. Alabama’s Leigh Tiffin, who made a 54-yarder in the 2008 game, previously held the record.
Carlson connected on 18 of 24 field goal attempts and made all 57 of his extra point attempts as a redshirt freshman in 2014.
