15th Annual Downtown Trick or Treat Set for October 29

The 15th Annual Downtown Trick or Treat, organized by the city of Auburn’s Parks and Recreation Department for children 12 and under, will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6-8 p.m. in downtown Auburn.

The reason for the nontraditional date is to ensure public safety; there is an Auburn High School home football game on Friday, Oct. 30 and an Auburn University home football game on Saturday, Oct. 31, according to David Dorton, director of public affairs for the City of Auburn.

“These events require pretty significant public safety resources,” Dorton said.

Capt. William Mathews with the community and special services/narcotics division of the Auburn Police Division said parents should teach children to use “common sense,” along with four major safety tips: travel in groups, wear contrasting clothing to promote higher visibility, cross the road only at intersections and eat only prepackaged candy.

Dana Stewart, special programs coordinator of the City of Auburn, said special activities this year include entertainment from Aubie, the Auburn University Tiger Paws, the Auburn High School Cheer Squad, Dr. Magical Balloons and the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve, along with a costume contest and a pet contest.

This popular community event was a large success last year, according to Stewart.

“We estimated that last year 4,000 people participated," Stewart said. "It’s huge.”
