Boys & Girls Clubs’ Fall Performing Arts Showcase Set for Oct. 23

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County will have its Fall Performing Arts Showcase on Friday, Oct. 23, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Boykin Community Center Auditorium.

Wanda Lewis, director of the Boys & Girls Clubs said the club's arts program allows members “to discover talents that they have and then to really hone those talents, or to improve them.”

Lewis said the Performing Arts Showcase gives the club members the opportunity to display the skills that they have developed throughout the year with their parents, other club members, and the Auburn community.

Abby Robinson, arts director of the Boys & Girls Clubs said these talents consist of varied types of entertainment: dance, bell choir, drumming and clay pottery will all be included in the showcase.

“I’m trying to tap into more than just fine arts with my program,” Robinson said.

According to Lewis, in addition to the variety of talents displayed, another aspect of the Performing Arts Showcase is the club members are using the event to help others.

“One of the things that is happening with this particular performance is that the kids are using this as a service project opportunity to give back to the community," Lewis said. "They do service projects throughout the year, and what they decided to do this year is instead of charging an admissions fee to come to the event, they will ask people to donate a canned food item … and so with that particular component of the program, that’s teaching them to give back and to share and it’s part of their character and leadership development impact.”

Lewis also said the Auburn unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs is competing with the Opelika unit to build the largest structure out of donated canned goods, and these goods will be given to the Food Bank of East Alabama.

According to Anthony Brock, director of the Boykin Community Center, this event has been successful in the past because of much community involvement.

“Last year it went well. We had a lot of support from the community and the parents were very much engaged," Brock said. "We want every year to be better.”
