New alternative stress therapy comes to Auburn

Alternative health expert offers stress relief and better sleep

For people who are being weighed down by the stress of college life, alternative therapies, such as Ancient Arts Reiki, might help.

Reiki is a an ancient therapy that predates modern medical practices.

Developed in Japan, Reiki roughly translates to God Light Energy.

To people who practice Reiki, the body is a battery, and different energies throughout the body affect the overall physiology of a person. The therapy is used to release tension held in certain parts of the body to eliminate stress in patients.

Though it can be used exclusively, it is generally used as a supplemental form of therapy to other traditional forms.

Jillian Smith, who became certified in the practice in 2006, has brought this ancient art to the Auburn-Opelika area.

“Seeing that look on their face when they come back and they are feeling much better, that is extremely satisfying to me,” Smith said.

Clients generally report a lowering of stress after working with her, as well as better sleeping patterns, according to Smith's website. In a standard Reiki session, one would expect to lay comfortably on their back as Smith gently places her hands over the body in different positions from the top of the head to the bottoms of the feet, allowing the Reiki energy to flow through the body fully. This process results in feelings of "deep relaxation and worth” according to her website.

Sessions typically last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour at a time. They can take place at either Smith’s home or the client's living space. Smith said she has been involved in Reiki on and off since her certification in 2006 and decided to fully dedicate to the art in 2015.

“I was ready to be my own boss and make my own business decisions,” Smith said.

Though she has had many clients over the years, Smith said she currently caters to three regulars.

Sessions are open to both students and adults, and Smith offers a midterm special for students. Appointments can be scheduled at ancientartsreiki.com
