Brother of man killed in officer-involved shooting says there is no cellphone footage

An alleged cellphone video showing an Opelika Police Department officer shoot and kill Bennie Lee Tignor does not exist, despite comments at a press conference Monday, Nov. 2.

Bernard Tignor told the media on Monday that there was a cellphone video of Opelika Police Department Officer Jared Greer shooting Bennie, but Walter Tignor, also Bennie's brother, confirmed to The Auburn Plainsman that no video exist.

John Andrew Harris, Lee County District 5 commissioner and family friend of the Tignors for approximately 30 years, said Bernard made a "misstatement" when he said there was cellphone footage.

"He was saying that out of hurt," Harris said.

However, they did take photos of the crime scene, according to Walter.

Walter also said there were two eyewitnesses to the shooting, Bennie's girlfriend, Betty Ligon, and her daughter, Shikeria Ligon.

"She (saw) the whole thing," Walter said, "and her daughter (saw) the whole thing."

Walter said Bennie was running into Betty's house when he was shot.

"[Greer] should have let him go on in the house," Walter said.

Walter said Betty has been "really upset" since the shooting.

"Every time she close her eyes, she sees [the shooting]," Walter said.

Both Walter and Harris said they want the truth to come out.

"I just want to see justice done," Walter said.
