The Auburn community gathered this morning at the Auburn Veterans Memorial for a memorial service led by Mayor Bill Ham.
"Auburn has an especially strong history of producing military volunteers and veterans," Ham said. "As is evident by all of the names you see around you."
The ceremony began with an opening statement by Mayor Ham, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the J.F Drake Middle School choir.
Ham gave special acknowledgement to Col. Andrew "Andy" Lamar, who is part of the inaugural veterans committee and works to raise scholarship money for veterans.
"This year Andy has raised $11,500 in scholarship funds for Auburn University and Southern Union," Ham said.
Prayers were read, the wreath was set and the J.F Drake Middle school choir gave a final performance of "Land that we Love."
Retired U.S Navy veteran Dan Drummond was invited to perform "Amazing Grace" on his bagpipes.
Ham concluded the service with a brief history of the veterans programs in Auburn, and by thanking veterans and their families for "all that they do."
"Thank you for your willingness to volunteer your services and your sacrifice," Ham said.
