The Auburn Tigers stumbled in their final game before heading into conference play, dropping a close one to Florida Gulf Coast University, 52-45.
Auburn and FGCU were almost identical on the stat sheet, but the difference was made on defense. Auburn turned the ball over 19 times, while FGCU only turned the ball over six times. The esteemed pressure defense of the Tigers proved to be ineffective, as FGCU committed the least turnovers of any opponent this season.
On top of the surprising defensive woes, this was Auburn’s worst game on the offensive side of the floor as well. FGCU was able to hold the Tigers to only six points in the second quarter and 10 in the third.
The only bright spot for the Tigers offense was Tra’Cee Tanner, as she tallied her fourth double-double of the season and scored 15 points. Tanner accounted for nearly half of Auburn’s offense, as she scored seven of the Tigers' 18 field goals. The next leading scorer was freshman guard Janaiah McKay, who recorded nine points. No other Tigers scored more than six points.
Auburn falls to 10-3 on the season as it welcomes in SEC play and the new year against the seventh-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Jan. 3 in Auburn Arena.
