Governor declares state of emergency ahead of Friday winter weather

The Auburn area and Alabama are expected to get a bought of winter weather Friday and Saturday, prompting the governor to issue a state of emergency effective Friday morning.

The Birmingham National Weather Service warns that Auburn will endure a day of cold and wet weather, beginning as soon as Friday morning. The NWS service placed Lee County under a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday and lasting until Saturday morning.

Forecasters say Auburn could receive up to a half inch of snow and sleet, and up to a tenth of an inch of ice tomorrow. With the weather, the area could see serious travel impacts and the possibility of sporadic power outages, the NWS said.

Ice accumulations could heavily affect commutes for Auburn residents, as the I-85 corridor is set to receive the brunt of ice accumulations.

Gov. Robert Bentley on Thursday announced he would declare a state of emergency, effective at 7 a.m. on Friday morning. The emergency will cover all Alabama counties, Bentley's announcement said.

At this time, Auburn City Schools does not plan to close or let out ahead of the winter weather, the school system said Thursday in a Twitter post.
