Board to vote on new University president Monday

Auburn may know who its next president will be as soon as next week.

The Auburn University Board of Trustees will vote Monday on who will be named the 19th president of the University, according to a press release from the Office of Communications and Marketing.

A 14-member search committee headed by Birmingham businessman and trustee Raymond J. Harbert has led the search for the next president.

President Jay Gogue announced his retirement in September. At the time, Gogue informed the board that he would continue serving until they found a replacement. He is expected to retire in the Summer.

Gogue has been president of the University since 2007.

"It's probably time. You know, you get old, and you get cantankerous," Gogue joked in an interview with The Plainsman in November.

He wanted to give the Board of Trustees an ample amount of time to search for a new president, Gogue, who has been a university president for 17 years, said.

He served as President of New Mexico State University from 2000 to 2003 and chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the University of Houston from 2003 to 2007.

The board will meet at 10:30 a.m. March 20 in the Student Center Ballroom for the public vote.

The board has yet to publicly name any of the candidates because they are likely high-level administrators or presidents at other universities.
