Student finds success in Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Design Contest

The Peachtree Road Race is an annual 10k held in Atlanta on the Fourth of July.

The race began in 1970 and has since grown to bring in 60,000 runners from around the world.

The T-shirts worn while crossing the finish line are a crucial component in the race.

Lydia Sweeney, senior in graphic design, said she's wanted to design for the contest before she knew what career path she wanted to take.

“I have wanted to compete in the Peachtree Road Race design contest way before I knew I even wanted to be a graphic designer,” Sweeney said. “My extended family has gathered to run the race as a Fourth of July tradition for over 30 years.”

This year Sweeney was in the top five for the Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Design Contest.

Sweeney designed five possible shirts and submitted three of them to be judged by a committee. The committee selected five finalists, and the winning design will be revealed on the day of the race.

The winner will receive $1,000, but Sweeney said the most gratification would come from seeing her design worn by 60,000 runners.

“My favorite part of participating in the contest was that I could combine two things I love doing – designing and running the Peachtree Road Race,” Sweeney said. “I had a lot of fun coming up with a variety of design solutions, and I ended up drawing a ton of peaches in the process.”
