A spirit that is not afraid

Dempsey Arts Center exhibits CityFest winners

The Dempsey Arts Center is currently displaying works submitted by artists for the CityFest Juried art show.

“We want to celebrate all the local artists,” Director of Auburn Arts Association Margaret Gluhman said. “The advantage is that artists could enter whatever they wanted.”

The show, which featured over 68 works from local artists and photographers, was held Saturday, April 29 in the Nunn-Winston house located at Kiesel Park.

“We made it look like an art gallery for the weekend,” Gluhman said.

Before the show, each artists's work was judged at the preview reception Thursday, April 27 where artists were invited to listen to music by local guitarist Phillip Rowton before hearing the results of the art competition.

“There was a lot of good work,” Gluhman said. “We had good public response that came by for the reception, must have been over 150.”

The Auburn and Opelika Tourism Bureau awarded over $1000 in prize money to artists in a number of mediums.

Tevin Drake, who submitted a graphite drawing titled “Reflections,” and Scott Melville who submitted an egg tempera painting titled “Gator,” both received $250 for the Best in Show Merit Award.

Other monetary awards include the City of Auburn Merit Award, which was given to Mary Ann Casey for her mixed-media painting titled “Soul Flight,” and the Auburn CityFest Merit Award for Photography which was given to Colt Fetters for his photo “Caminar con Crystal”.

The exhibit featuring many of these works is located in the gallery of the Dempsey Arts Center and is open for the public to view free of charge.
