With online streaming becoming more and more popular, it has created an intriguing market place for businesses. The problem, however, is you don’t hear about other sites in the market because of sites like Netflix and Hulu.
A new streaming site has recently risen to the surface. Founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2008 and then brought to San Fransisco, Kanopy is a new streaming site for students and adults that provides an alternative for movie watchers everywhere.
What sets Kanopy apart is the absence of a monthly fee. While the two entertainment powerhouses charge a $8-12 monthly fee, Kanopy doesn't require any kind of fee.
Kanopy has teamed up with more than 200 public library systems in the United States to offer over 30,000 movies to library cardholders at no cost. The only thing users need is a card from their local or university branch. When accessing the website, users are asked to enter the name of the public or university library and request approval. The site will then email them back with its results on whether the branch is included on the website, according to their website.
All movies can be watched on various platforms such as iOS phone apps, Android and Roku boxes. The site offers a similar experience to other streaming platforms, without the need to reach into the wallet.
Since Kanopy is heavily connected with libraries, their movie selection is different than that of Netflix and Hulu. Offering a greater selection of documentaries and international films, the site holds unique options. Some libraries also hold users to a certain number of free movies per month, for example, New York Public Library cardholders can watch up to ten free movies in that time period.
Receiving features in The New York Times, CNBC, The New Yorker and Business Insider, Kanopy has created a new and exciting concept that’s off to a good start.
