A spirit that is not afraid

College Republicans

The Auburn University College Republicans’ purpose is to spread conservative values on campus and in the community.

Cole Davis, the president of the College Republicans, said that conservative values could mean different things to different people, but that it usually includes believing that government influence should be limited and the economic market should be free.

“Someone can call themselves a conservative and say, ‘Yeah I believe in low taxes and limited government,’ but not really understand why these principles work, or they don’t understand the political philosophy around different 20th Century presidents like Ronald Reagan,” Davis said. “Once you know what you believe and why what you believe really works, then the next step is to be able to defend what you believe in an argument or any kind of discussion.”

Through events like voter registration drives during elections, debates with other student political organizations and volunteering for political campaigns, the College Republicans are able to fulfill their purpose and spread their values as well as prepare them for a politically-minded career after graduation.

“The College Republicans is a good platform if someone wants to network, get out there and meet people and actually get experience with politicians and campaigning,” Davis said. “For the governor’s race, which isn’t until much later, there are people contacting us now wanting volunteers and interns.”

Along with activities centered on political activism, the College Republicans also host a number of social events throughout the school year like football tailgates and get-togethers around food.

“If anyone is on the fence, there’s really nothing to lose,” Davis said. “I’d say if you’re passionate about politics or if you’re passionate about learning about politics … then College Republicans would be a good organization to join just to find like-minded people.”
