Senior defender Paul James III has left the Auburn football program, head coach Gus Malzahn announced Thursday at his first spring press conference.
James, a 6-foot-3 outside linebacker, sustained a knee injury in what was called a "freak" accident in the practices leading up to Auburn's showdown with LSU in 2016 at Jordan-Hare.
The senior was granted a medical redshirt last summer, allowing for an extra year of eligibility.
James recorded just a trio of tackles in as many games in 2016, however the linebacker dominated on 2017 A-Day, recording four tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss.
Last season, James tallied five tackles in four games.
