Police tape on North Gay Street in Auburn, Ala., on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.

The Auburn Police Division arrested a 43-year-old from Dadeville, Alabama, Clifford Earl Williams, after a grand jury issued an indictment charging him with sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years of age.

Williams was arrested on Monday, May 7.

Police said in a statement Monday that the arrested stemmed from an investigation into the sexual abuse of a child reported to the police on Aug. 10, 2015.

The incident, police said, occurred at a residence on Oak Street.

The police were made aware that a child had potentially been sexually abused by Williams while the child was in his care before Aug. 10.

An investigation by the police and the Lee County Department of Human Resources resulted in Williams being identified as the individual responsible.

The case was presented to a Lee County grand jury, which indicted him on the felony charge.

He turned himself into police and was taken into custody.

He was transported to the Lee County Jail, where he remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.
