“The most important thing I can do for college students is making sure we have jobs,” Battle said to The Plainsman.

Alabama governor candidate Tommy Battle visits Auburn Airport for a rally on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 in Auburn, Ala.

With only hours before the polls closed, Republican gubernatorial candidate and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle landed at Auburn airport to speak to supporters inside of the terminal.

“The most important thing is that we want to tell everybody ‘make sure you get out and vote,’” Battle said. “We started this a year ago, and over that year we’ve been to 67 counties. We’ve been to 22 forums. We have been to over 400 meetings.”

Before delivering his speech, Battle moved around the room and spoke to many of his supporters who came to the airport.

“We’ve seen people all across the state, and a great thing to understand is that this is a great state," Battle said. "We have great people here and people who want to do better for their city, their community, for their state. Our job in the campaign is to get all those people together and moving in one direction, but after you get elected you’ve got to keep those people together and moving forward for the whole state to make this state better.”

Battle said that his theme throughout his campaign has been that Alabama can do better.

“We have potential in this state with jobs," Battle said. "We have potential in this state with taking care of roads. We have potential in this state to improve education. We want to make Alabama the great state it is.”

Auburn was Battle’s third stop on his day of campaigning after visiting Baldwin County and Dothan, Alabama.

“My dream and desire is if we win tonight, if we win the governorship, in four years we look back and say wow we have made progress in this state. We’ve made this state a great place. We’ve made this state better,” Battle said.

Battle is in the Alabama gubernatorial primary with state Sen. Bill Hightower, Gov. Kay Ivey and evangelist Scott Dawson.

“The most important thing I can do for college students is making sure we have jobs,” Battle said to The Plainsman. “We’ve had some experience up in the [Huntsville area]. We’ve made 24,000 jobs over the past 10 years, and that’s 24,000 young students who have had the opportunity to come to our community, to have a job, to raise a family, to put a roof over their head and to put food on the table. To me, that’s the most important thing I can do for them.”
