Wuerffel Trophy watch list adds to Auburn DL Derrick Brown's decorated preseason

Between the Bronko Nagurski and Outland watch lists, and a second team All-SEC selection, Auburn junior defensive tackle Derrick Brown is showing out this preseason.

Brown added his third watch list Thursday when the 6-foot-5 defender was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, awarded annually to the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement."

On the field, Brown is a force for Auburn's top-tier defensive line. The Sugar Hill, Georgia, native posted 56 tackles in 2017 with nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. Off the field, he is a two-year recipient of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was named an Academic Top Tiger last season.

Brown represented Auburn from 2016-17 at the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council for football, as well as a mission trip to the Dominican Republic in May. His leadership earned him a nomination for the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team last week.

Named for 1996 Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel, the trophy will announce semifinalists Nov. 1 and finalists Nov. 19. The 2018 recipient will be selected in New York City on Dec. 4.
