Police and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Demetrious A. Newell Jr., 26, from Cusseta, Alabama, on a warrant charging him with one count of murder.

The Auburn Police Division and the U.S. Marshals Service have made an arrest in connection with a weekend double homicide that claimed the lives of two men and injured another woman.

Police and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Demetrious A. Newell Jr., 26, from Cusseta, Alabama, Thursday on a warrant charging him with one count of murder.

Newell was out on bond at the time of the shooting for a previous murder wherein the Auburn Police Division charged him on July 30, 2016, of shooting and killing Anthony Jamal Davis of Auburn.

The arrest this week comes after an investigation into the death of Dominique ONeil Key, 36, from Auburn, and Omar Trenton Torbert, age 23, from Tuskegee. The two men were killed Saturday morning from gunshot wounds.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 800 block of North Donahue Drive at about 3:45 a.m.

Police say Newell is responsible for the death of Omar Trenton Torbert, but the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

The 61-year-old female also received minor injuries but was treated at EAMC and released.

Newell was transported to Lee County Jail and his bond set at $150,000, though his bond was revoked because of the previous charges. He will remain in custody on those charges and the new charge from Saturday.
