Rec Center welcomes students back with Get Rec'd

“It’s one of our best ways to get our name out there,” Hiskey said. “It’s a great way to just broadcast immediately.”

Students prepare to enter Get Rec'd on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, in Auburn, Ala.

Students crowd near a photo backdrop, waiting to enter the basketball courts at the Rec Center on Tuesday, Aug. 21 for Get Rec’d.

The annual event is held on two floors of the Rec Center in order to encourage and engage students with Rec Center staff and local businesses, as well as Auburn’s club sports.

Maddie Marsh, freshman in global studies, had only been to the Rec Center once before, but she decided to come to work out and stayed for the event.

On some of the courts, large blow-up activities filled the space along with challenges for prizes and opportunities to have mini group fitness classes. In order for students to receive the annual free T-shirt, they had to pick up a card and have at least four businesses stamp it.

Multiple local businesses were present including James Bros Bikes, Pink, Mountain High Outfitters and more.

“We get a lot of people that come in that have heard about our center from this particular event,” said Jeremy Brooks, one of the representatives of AMF Lanes.

AMF Lanes has run an online club event this year, giving away benefits and free passes to students who visited their table.

Students could be seen crawling inside tents, participating in physical obstacle courses or kicking soccer balls at a large inflatable scoreboard in order to win coveted prizes.

Christy Coleman was working for the Rec Center at the event, promoting the War Eagle Warrior Challenge for the Auburn Strong program.

With the male and female categories, students could win every 30 minutes, Coleman said.

“After Get Rec’d is over, we want [students] to know two things,” Coleman said. “One, Auburn Strong is a wellness program that helps you meet your fitness goals. It is for students as well as faculty staff. It is a fabulous program that covers nutrition, fitness and counseling on how to do behavior change, so that’s Auburn Strong."

On the bottom floor of the Rec Center, students found all of Auburn’s club sports ready to welcome them to the team. On the perimeter of the club teams were many local businesses and restaurants giving away free food to students.

Eli Hiskey, senior in communication, was promoting the Auburn soccer team, which he has been a part of since his sophomore year.

“It’s one of our best ways to get our name out there,” Hiskey said. “It’s a great way to just broadcast immediately.”

From freshmen to graduate students, Get Rec’d draws a wide range of students each year. Students who have not spent much time at the Rec previously are even drawn into the fun of the event.

Jalaan Averette, second-year graduate student in the physics department, participated in a challenge doing burpees and exercises, winning an icepack in the process.

“I’ve never seen this many people in the Rec before, and it’s nice to see all these faces. It’s chill,” Averette said.

“Some of [the tables], it’s really hard to say favorites, there are some of [the tables], they're coming with their A game, and I’m like, ‘This is why we come here,’” Averette said.
