Spring 2019 elections for the Student Government Association are approaching, and the deadline to submit a declaration of intent to run is Friday, Nov. 30.

Major candidates include: SGA president, vice president, treasurer and Miss Auburn. Minor candidates are senators, school’s council president and vice president for each of the 12 schools and colleges across campus.

In order to run for a position, students must submit a declaration of intent, which can be found on the SGA AUInvolve page under the forms tab. These letters must be submitted to the AUInvolve page by Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.

Miss Auburn candidates must be nominated by a campus organization or residence hall by Nov. 26.

“Only undergraduate, female students who are currently in at least their third academic year, having completed 60 hours of coursework with at least two semesters and 24 of those hours being completed at Auburn are eligible to qualify for Miss Auburn,” said Bri Thomas, SGA executive director of elections.

If students were unable to attend one of the informational meetings but are still interested in running for a position, they can visit the website SGA website (aub.ie/elections) to read job descriptions and view the election schedule.

Riley Hambrick, SGA College of Liberal Arts senator, said that running as a candidate and serving on Senate has been rewarding as he's strived to achieve outreach to his constituents.

“We should seek to know the individual student [by] asking in what way we can serve those whom we hope to represent and work toward building a more unified Auburn," Hambrick said. "Ensuring that every voice is heard, and that every need is met is my personal goal.”

Hambrick said the outreach component of his campaign helped in promoting himself.

“It is significant that the student body knows who they are electing and what we, as aspiring members of SGA, hope to accomplish throughout the year,” Hambrick said.

SGA President Dane Block said that running for any position on SGA is difficult, but he encouraged those running to be bold and enjoy every second.

“The research that a candidate does toward their platform, the support received through putting together a campaign staff and ultimately the execution of the plan during the week leading up to election day are times I will never forget,” Block said.
