A 24-year-old Auburn man was arrested Friday after medical officials reported a 2-year-old girl's "suspicious" injuries to the authorities, police said Monday.

The Auburn Police Division arrested Fredricus Rydell Johnson during a search of a home on the 1100 block of Northwood Drive in Auburn. Johnson has been charged with aggravated child abuse, a felony carrying a possible life sentence.

The Auburn Police Division arrested Fredricus Rydell Johnson, 24, and charged him with aggravated child abuse.

Medical officials became concerned after the child was taken to a hospital in Columbus, Georgia, with injuries "consistent with abuse," police said.

The 2-year-old was later airlifted to a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where she remains in critical condition as of Monday.

Police said an investigation "confirmed" that the injuries were intentional. Johnson was the only caregiver for the child at the time of the arrest, police said.

He was taken to the Lee County Detention Facility, where his bond was set at $30,000.

The case remains under investigation by Auburn police and the Lee County Department of Human Resources.
