'Green Book' wins 2019 Best Picture Oscar with alumna Octavia Spencer as executive producer

Auburn alumna Octavia Spencer was an executive producer on "Green Book," which won the 2019 Oscar for Best Picture. 

Spencer, class of 1994, is an Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning actress, as well. The actor grew up in Montgomery, Alabama.

The movie follows an African-American pianist and his Italian-American bodyguard and driver as they travel throughout the South for his gigs. It focuses on race issues and interracial friendship. However, it has faced controversy for perpetuating stereotypes of the black community as well as a scandal with its director.

Spencer acted as executive producer on the film, which also received 2019 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay and 2019 Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay.
