Jamari Smith, an 18-year-old Montgomery native, died Wednesday night of an apparent accidental drowning, according to the Lee County Coroner's Office.

Smith and some of his friends were swimming in the lake area of Chewacla State Park when he reportedly became tired and disappeared beneath the water.

Auburn Police and Fire along with East Alabama Medical Clinic Center EMS responded to the 911 call at 4:30 p.m.

Auburn Fire located Smith underwater in the lake soon after arriving.

"Advanced life support measures were immediately initiated, and he was rushed to the emergency room of East Alabama Medical Center," the coroner's office said.

Once in the emergency room, medical staff attempted to revive Smith.

However, these efforts proved unsuccessful, and Smith was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m.

"There is no foul play suspected and the case is being treated as an accidental drowning," the coroner's office said. "The case is being investigated by the Auburn Police and the Lee County Coroner."
