Auburn University will not have a traditional spring break next semester, according to an email sent to students and faculty.

Today, the University announced the updated academic calendar for the coming spring semester.

According to the University, modifications to the academic calendar will include a delayed start, replacement of spring break with several “wellness days” placed throughout the semester, and a “reading day” added prior to final exams.

While the University will reopen on Jan 4, as previously scheduled, classes will not begin until Jan. 11.

Spring break, originally planned for the week of March 8, will now be replaced with three “wellness days.” These wellness days will be spaced out throughout the semester, falling on Feb. 16, March 10, and April 1. These days are on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Classes will not meet on these days, but campus will still be open.

The end to the spring semester has also been altered.

“Classes will end April 22, with a 'reading day' on April 23 for final exam preparation,” the email reads.

Final exams will be completed by April 30, and commencement will take place from May 1 to May 3.

According to the email sent out by the University, the changes made to the academic calendar are intended to reduce risks of COVID-19 transmission, as well as allowing the campus community to focus on mental health and wellness.

“The modified calendar supports the university’s efforts to provide on-campus teaching and learning next semester,” the email reads. “The University plans to offer more than 70% of its spring undergraduate courses face-to-face, along with some online and blended options.”
