Opelika man arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia

Police tape surrounds a crime scene.

Opelika Police Department arrested a man on Tuesday after he fled during an attempted traffic stop. 

At 4 p.m. Jan. 11, OPD attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Douglas Spraggins, 38, on Crawford Road. 

Officers pursued Spraggins as he fled in his vehicle before crashing at the intersection of William Avenue and South Long Street. Spraggins then fled on foot before officers apprehended him shortly after. 

Spraggins was arrested on charges of two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs, one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Spraggins was also charged with one count of certain persons forbidden to possess a pistol, one count of attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and one count of felony probation revocation. 

The case is still under investigation with additional charges pending. The OPD asks that if the public has any information on the suspect to contact the OPD Narcotics Division at 334-705-5220 or tips can be submitted through the Opelika Police Mobile App.
