Today, Auburn football continued its SEC losing streak after losing 10-16 to the Texas A&M Aggies, marking their second straight loss. Despite offensive struggles to stay in the game, the Tiger defense put forth a strong effort tonight.
Texas A&M’s strong receiver room was held to 207 receiving yards, their lowest all season thus far. While Auburn could only manage to get three points throughout the first three quarters, the defense held the Aggie offense to one touchdown all game, enough to keep Auburn within potential striking distance for most of the contest.
Transfer linebacker Xavier Atkins also had an electric moment with an interception early in the fourth quarter. Atkins ran it 73 yards all the way to the Texas A&M two-yard line, which gave the Auburn offense the positioning to score their only touchdown of the game.
Atkins led the defense today with one sack, his first career forced fumble, two tackles-for-loss, and a career-high two tackles. The defense needed this leadership tonight between the crushing atmosphere of Kyle Field and the loss of senior edge rusher Keyron Crawford to injury early in the second half.
With 71 tackles for the Tigers tonight, multiple players made big plays and had a chance to shine. Freshman Eric Winters had the first sack of his collegiate career for a loss of 12 yards for the Aggies. Kensley Louidor-Faustin and Chris Murray each had a career-high four tackles, Robert Woodyard Jr. had a career-high nine tackles, and Bobby Jamison-Travis had a career-high five tackles.
This is the first time in school history that Auburn football has started 0-2 in SEC play for three consecutive seasons. With such a backslide from the first three games of the season, Auburn fans are scrambling to figure out what the rest of the year will look like.
The Auburn defense will return after a bye week to play Georgia in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday, October 11. The game time has not yet been announced, but it will be available to stream during the night TV window on ESPN.
