As we head into the bye week of the Auburn football season most would agree there have been many ups and downs already in just five short weeks. The Tigers and their offense led by quarterback Jackson Arnold will be looking to take on head coach Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs at home in their next game but first I want to take a look at the offense and who has been the main contributors so far this year and determine who has been the “Offensive MVP”.
I would say someone that definitely has to be the conversation simply because he is the captain of the offense is quarterback Jackson Arnold. Obviously there has been much controversy around the Auburn passing game as of late and who is to blame whether it be the play calling, the offensive line, or Arnold himself.
Arnold has accumulated 846 yards on 134 attempts on 87 receptions while running for 187 yards and being responsible for 10 touchdowns through five games. Arnold has a also protected the ball through nearly half of the season protecting the with the perfection of zero turnovers so far.
I would have to say that although Arnold’s statistics have been solid, the fact that the Auburn offense has struggled to show up in big moments and some of the big sacks he has taken when he needs to get the ball out would take him out of contention for the “Offensive MVP” for me.
On the other side of the Auburn passing attack from the quarterback Arnold is standout wide receiver Cam Coleman who many would certainly agree is the best player on the Auburn offense if not the entire team. Coleman has been Auburn’s wide receiver one since his freshman season last year when he broke on to the scene.
Coleman has racked up 255 yards on 17 receptions and two touchdowns. While the consensus that he is the best player on Auburn’s offense is likely true, I think through five games his production levels have been good but not great enough to be considered the most valuable player for the offense.
Another big part of the Tigers offense early in the season has been junior running back Jeremiah Cobb, who during the absence of running back one Damari Alston, has stepped up big time for the Auburn offense rushing for 403 yards while scoring four touchdowns on 58 carries.
The knock on Cobb would just be that he has a smaller sample size throughout 5 games because of the offenses low run rate throughout the two games of SEC play but to me despite Cobb maybe not being the best player on the offense, I think that he has produced the most making him my “Offensive MVP.”
The Tigers offense is hoping to get rolling in a much better direction following a tough loss in a low scoring affair against Texas A&M. With the help of Arnold, Coleman, and Cobb the Tigers will be seeking their first SEC victory of the season in a big challenge at home against the Georgia Bulldogs at 6:30 C.S.T. on Saturday.
