University turns on new $1 million 'Hopper' supercomputer

With click of a button and the whirl of some fans, Auburn University’s new $1 million supercomputer was officially in operation.
"Miss Auburn is the official hostess of Auburn University," according to the SGA website. "She is a woman that embodies the spirit of Auburn and what it means to be an Auburn woman. Miss Auburn is a female ambassador, representing the university internally to the student body and also externally to the outside community, alumni, and prospective students. She is elected by the student body on a platform, a cause that will motivate and engage the university."
Meredith Thomley, Biomedical Sciences and Pre-Medicine junior, was nominated by the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society for Miss Auburn and is bringing Auburn students together to strive for better health and wellness services on campus by working with administration. As she promotes “Have Mercy with Meredith”, Thomley said her major has been a big part in learning about compassion.
“Going Beyond Borders” headlines Ashman’s platform, which focuses on serving anyone from Auburn residents to people overseas.
James Beauchaine James Beauchaine, junior in biomedical sciences, thoroughly enjoys handling money. Sophomore year, he served on the finance branch of SGA in the Verizon Wireless position. “I really enjoyed it and got to see the benefits of a partnership that Auburn and Verizon have,” Beauchaine said. In the past year, Beauchaine said serving on the Budget and Finance Committee is what sparked his interest in running for SGA treasurer. “I really got to see more of the monetary side of things,” Beauchaine said.
Nathan Rigby and Brandon Honeywell are running for SGA vice president.
Drake Pooley, senior, is triple majoring. He's working to earn degrees in finance, economics and international business-Chinese. He decided to learn Chinese because his grandmother knew six languages, but never got around to studying learning that one.
Nathan Rigby, senior in mechanical engineering, is an SGA vice presidential candidate hoping to improve security at Auburn. “It’s important to me that every Auburn student, alumnae and visitor to our campus can enjoy everything that Auburn has to offer without ever worrying about their security, safety or well-being,” Rigby said
Jesse Westerhouse, junior in finance, was involved in some of the largest SGA initiatives in recent memory — Tiger Scheduler, the Auburn Memorial project and the Mental Health Task Force. He believes his student government experience, along with his fraternity membership and service as a Plainsman, has prepared him for SGA presidency. "They've given me different perspectives about so many parts of campus," Westerhouse said. SGA is already a great organization, Westerhouse said, but members could work to improve student perception. "People either think we're pretentious or we don't do anything," Westerhouse said. "We need to show we're everyday students, and we just want to serve this campus." Westerhouse also wants to work on diversity in SGA. "SGA, while it's an awesome organization in so many ways, isn't always representative of the student body," Westerhouse said.
Brandon Honeywell, junior in biomedical sciences and pre-medicine, is running for SGA vice president and hopes to use his three-year experience in SGA to make positive changes in office. “Essentially, my platform boils down to a promise to execute the VP office well,” Honeywell said.
A chemical spill in Broun Hall caused the building to be evacuated, but there were no injuries, according to Chance Corbett, associate director of public safety and security.
As construction on the Mell Classroom Building begins, SGA senators discussed some features that could potentially be made available in the study spaces, as well as how study room scheduling would function.
Hate speech, diversity-based classes and scholarships were among the topics President Jay Gogue and Vice President of Student Affairs Bobby Woodard discussed with students at the Black Student Union's General Assembly Address on Monday, Feb. 1.
This year, AUDM has a public fundraising goal of $395,000. In AUDM's first four years, the organization fundraised $605,000, which is why it chose this year's goal to be that specific amount, according to Cory Brinkman, vice president of fundraising.
Auburn University Wins another One Ameera Steward Campus Writer A College of Agriculture professor won an award for his significant contributions over to the science of cotton genetics and cotton breeding. David Weaver won Cotton Genetics Research Award this year in New Orleans at the Beltwide Cotton Improvement Conference. The award is given annually by the National Cotton Council.
Madison Gaines, junior in human development and family studies, received her Miss Auburn nomination from Auburn Singers and now promotes her platform “Auburn Gaines Perspective," which strives to create deeper relationships with international students. Gaines said she wants to make the Auburn Family the University promotes a reality by unifying every student and making inclusion a priority on campus. Gaines lived in China and is working on a minor in Asian studies. She said her time overseas greatly inspired her platform. “When choosing a platform for Miss Auburn, I wanted something tangible that could make a difference right here on Auburn’s campus,” Gaines said.
The drive is a collaborative effort among the College Democrats, College Republicans, the Young Americans for Liberty, SGA and Omega Phi Alpha.
