Cool off with water sports

Summertime is hot, and cooling off by the pool is one way to relax. However, there are natural resources in Auburn that combine fitness, fun and water. Amanda White, park naturalist at Chewacla State Park, said water sports are popular at Chewacla, especially swimming, peddle boats and canoes.

What started out as an idea by assistant professor Andrew Kozlowski to better prepare his students for what it means to be a professional artist, has now turned into a gallery exhibit that also sells the work of current students, alumni and faculty.

Auburn students attend summer music festivals

Music festivals are a popular activity each summer.  It is only June and already Auburn students have been busy attending the different festivals going on.  Shaky Boots Country Music Festival, one of the first this summer, took place on the Kennnesaw State University campus May 16-17. Bands such as Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry, Eli Young Band, Jana Kramer and many more smaller bands and artists were in attendance.

Claire Lynch and her band have performed all over the world, but today, Friday, May 29, they will perform somewhere familiar.  Lynch, a veteran bluegrass performer and her band, The Claire Lynch Band, are just finishing a tour, stopping in Nova Scotia, Canada, before playing on the Plains.  The Huntsville native said she enjoys playing in Alabama, and said it is like a “homecoming” for her.  “Coming home and playing in Alabama is the sweetest thing,” Lynch said.

Students use music as a stress reliever

With the stress of balancing school and social lives, it is common for students to find an outlet to escape the stress. For foreign students facing language barriers, it is even more crucial to have that go-to activity to help get their mind off of the pressure. For Xiao Liu, graduate student in electrical engineering, music is the best distraction. Liu came to America in August 2014 from China because he said he believed it would challenge him and make him a better student and person. “Staying in one place for many years is boring,” Liu said.

Testosterone and Tiaras: guys’ perspectives on pageants

The pageant world is often seen as all glitz, glamour and looking pretty on a stage. However, the recent Big Man on Campus event caused some male competitors to rethink their views on the pageant industry. “Now I think of beauty pageants like any other competition,” said David Mitchell, junior in undeclared science and math.
