COLUMN | Recognizing Indigenous Land

November is Native American Heritage Month, dedicated to remembering and acknowledging Indigenous American history and recognizing past wrongdoings against Indigenous and Native communities. A way to effectively discuss their issues is to listen to Native and Indigenous people themselves to decentralize our own experiential worldview when educating ourselves on them. This month offers opportunities to become educated and honor their history while working to protect their future.

Cow College: Exploring Auburn University's rich legacy of cattle

Auburn University’s history as a leader in agricultural work dates back to 1872 when it became the South’s first land-grant university, established for the purpose of education and community outreach. Easily dismissed as pastoral and picturesque, cattle production is often out-of-mind from the everyday life of metropolitan communities. Auburn University's nickname "Cow College," has a deeper meaning within the world of agriculture.

Over fifty percent of America’s counties account for rural, non-metropolitan areas, it is perhaps more important now than ever to consider how government policies affect these communities and work to protect them. As centers of American agriculture and industry, given the increased population following the COVID pandemic, coupled with recent environmental impacts such as hurricane Helene, it is perhaps more important now than ever to consider how government policies affect these communities and work to protect them.
