Tigers beat Georgia in first game of three

The Tigers (27-16) took on Georgia (21-21) Thursday in the first game of three to be played this weekend. The Tigers won 4-2 in a game that saw no scoring after the third inning.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Cole Lipscomb got the start for the Tigers. Lipscomb went for seven innings, gave up six hits and allowed two earned runs.

After the game, Lipscomb said the defense stepped up on a day where he didn’t have his best control.

“When you don’t have your best stuff you know they’re going to be aggressive,” Lipscomb said. “They’re going to put the ball in play, you’ve just got to work on throwing the ball down in the zone, hit your spots and really let your defense work behind you, which they did.”

The Tigers got on the board quickly as they were able to put three runs up in the bottom of the first inning. After sophomore Kyler Deese led the inning off with a double, fellow sophomore Anfernee Grier’s single allowed him to score first.

The next batter, sophomore Daniel Robert, hit a flew out to left field allowing junior Melvin Gray to score. Grier, still on base following his earlier hit, scored after sophomore Blake Logan singled over the short-stop’s head.

The Tigers' defense gave up runs in the second and third innings bringing the Bulldogs to 3-2, but freshman Austin Murphy scored in the bottom of the third off of a grounder from junior Sam Gilikin.

After a scoreless streak from both teams, the Tigers made a change to junior right-hander Trey Wingenter.

Despite the lack of offense, Wingenter was able to get through his two innings with no allowed runs and only two hits. Coach Sunny Galloway was ejected in the top of the ninth following a disagreement with the umpire over whether some balls were actually strikes.

After the game, Galloway laughed off the ejection before getting straight into how the team played and particularly the teams ability to get through the day without their best pitching.

“When you look out there at the K corner and you see only one or two K’s, you know that he probably doesn’t have his best stuff," Galloway said. "They did a good job of not chasing. I thought Cole was up in the zone a little bit, we got some deep fly ball outs.”

Lipscomb is awarded the win, and his record is now 6-1 on the year. The Tigers' will play Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m. as Auburn looks to go up 2-0 in the series against the Bulldogs.
