Sunday marked the conclusion of the Auburn football team's first week of spring practice.

Sunday's practice was the fourth overall and second in pads, so it included several full-contact drills.

"It was a good first day, there's a ton of room for improvement, but I like their effort, they're really trying hard," said first-year head coach Gene Chizik after Saturday's practice. "I think we'll make some more progress every day."

Both weekend practices started with special teams work, followed by individual positions, skelly drills and team periods.

"We're throwing a lot at them," said offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. "We're not only throwing a lot at them, we're throwing a pace at them and they're going to have to recover. We're putting a lot of stress on them, but we'll keep after them."

The coaching staff has not named a starting quarterback, and Chizik doesn't plan on making the decision any time soon.

"We can't say right now we have a starter," Chizik said. "That'd be very premature right now. We're just mixing them in, and we don't have any starters right now. That's not just at quarterback, that's for the whole team."

Sophomore Kodi Burns started the last six games of the 2008 season, but is fighting for the starting job yet again with fellow QBs Neil Caudle, Chris Todd and Barrett Trotter.

"It's always good to have a fresh start, and I'm trying to take advantage of it, but I think it's a great opportunity for me," Caudle said. "We're all getting a fair shot, we're all getting equal reps."

Auburn's practice Tuesday was canceled due to weather. The Tigers returned to practice Wednesday. The annual A-Day game is scheduled for April 18 at 1 p.m.
