A spirit that is not afraid

Auburn Golfers at 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur

Golfers from around the world converged on Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., for the 109th Amateur last week.

The tournament combines aspects of stroke play with match play. Stroke play puts the individual up against the entire field, whereas match play is a bracketed style that puts golfers in head to head situations.

The first round was stroke play. It began with 150 golfers, with the top 64 advancing to the second round and match play.

Auburn had two golfers competing this year make the match play rounds, Candace Schepperle, senior business administration, and Cydney Clanton, junior finance.

Both Schepperle and Clanton won their first match 2 & 1 and 3 & 2 respectively.

Schepperle's first round match was against Tiger Woods' niece, Cheyenne Woods.

"Playing with professionals has a different feel from playing against other collegiate golfers," Schepperle said. "The courses are harder and maintained better than college courses."

The two Auburn golfers continued their winning in the second round, with Clanton defeating Nanette Hill, Pelham Manor, N.Y., 2 & 1 and Schepperle defeating Molly Aronsson, Coral Springs, Fla., 4 & 3.

Schepperle said that most tournaments are stroke play and that she doesn't get to play match play often.

"Match play is fun because I don't do it a lot. I tend to like stroke play though because I'm more used to worrying about my own game," Schepperle said.

Clanton met her match in the third round, falling to Jennifer Song, from Ann Arbor, Mich., 2 & 1. Schepperle made it past Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Canada 3 & 2.

Schepperle's run ended in the quarterfinal round as she was defeated by California native Jennifer Johnson 5 & 4.

This was the last tournament before the fall semester starts.

"I am enjoying my time in college and am excited for the next season," Schepperle said. "I'm hoping to use this summer as a push for the upcoming season."
