A spirit that is not afraid

CLA Reads

This fall, the College of Liberal Arts is hosting CLA Reads!, a semester long program of discussions and seminars focused on "The Sharp Shooting Blues" by Lewis Nordan.

This new program is an attempt to build community in the college between students and faculty.

Constance C. Relihan, senior associate dean of academic affairs and English professor, describes the plot of The Sharp Shooting Blues: "Set in a small town in Mississippi in the mid '50s, it tells the story of a group of characters who have to cope with various kinds of loss and suffering and who find ways to hope amidst the problems they face. It is a very funny novel that still confronts some very tough subjects-- including death, rape, alcoholism, suicide," Relihan said.

The author, Lewis Nordan, came to campus last January for a Symposium for his work, which generated a lot of discussion. Nordan is also an Auburn Alum.

For students interested in becoming involved, the book is available in the AU bookstore and events will be held until Dec. 2. The next meeting is an oral reading and open discussion by Professor Chris Quals in Tichenor 310 on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, go to: http://media.cla.auburn.edu/cla/images/CLA-ReadsLargePosterLQ.pdf
