A spirit that is not afraid

Ron Paul only honest Republican candidate

If someone asked, I would claim to be a Republican, but when watching or reading about the GOP race, sometimes I find myself cringing. Why must all these candidates be so unappealing?

I was so disturbed by this that I found myself doing a little digging of my own--trying to look at the facts of where the candidates stood on the important issues. This is what I have uncovered--and let me preface this by saying I would more categorize myself as a Constitutionalist than a Republican--our forefathers who wrote the Constitution were the best and brightest men of their age, and they had a pretty good formula on how to run a country properly, i.e., America has been a world power ever since (although unfortunately that could be changing).

What I have come to realize through my research is that Ron Paul is the only candidate who sticks by the Constitution, striving to protect the rights that were given to America through that document.

Now, you're going to put down this article because this is some crazy girl supporting Ron Paul because she wants to legalize weed.

Wrong. Not my stance at all.

I think Ron Paul makes the most sense of all the GOP candidates for many different reasons.

Foreign policy: He believes that, yes, America should fight battles when we feel we have been wronged, but who died and made America the world's police force? Why must we send Americans into battle and danger for senseless wars. I am all for protecting America and punishing those who have hurt us, but I do not think America must meddle in every other country and establish a democracy in every other country.

Immigration: Another hot topic, especially in Alabama. Paul has stated that he wants to protect our borders even more firmly, even outlawing that children born in the country are citizens if their parents are not. He supports legal immigration, which is an important part of America's foundation, but feels that illegal immigration is hurting the economy immensely. I can get behind that as well, Paul.

I also agree with Ron Paul's views on abortion, the Second Amendment and health care. (He is a medical doctor, and I feel that he is very informed about two of those issues.) As far as the economy and taxes go, I usually don't understand much of it (I am a journalism major), but from my research Ron Paul passionately insists that he will lower government spending--and that I understand, and that is something I want. Ron Paul believes in states' rights (You know, the stuff our country was founded on?) and less government (which is what we need). Once again, I agree with Paul.

So now you're going to write in to The Plainsman saying I am wasting my vote because there is no way Ron Paul will float with the general public, but when March 13 comes around, I will cast my vote for him anyway because he is the only candidate that has any sense to go back to the foundation of our nation: the Constitution.

I will support him in this election and any more he decides to run in because he doesn't make me embarrassed for the Republican Party.
