After notching another conference win on Friday night against Mississippi State, the Auburn Tigers softball team faced the Bulldogs for the second game of the series Saturday.
For the second game in a row, the visiting Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, but the hosts rallied late to grab a 5-2 victory.
"It's just about making the adjustment early and getting it done," said Auburn head coach Clint Myers. "(Mississippi State's Allison Owen) was a good pitcher. She has a good ERA and she has been pitching well all season long, it's just one of those things that we didn't adjust and we have to do a better job."
After four scoreless innings, Mississippi State third baseman Caroline Seitz hit a two-run home run to give the Bulldogs the lead.
Auburn was held hitless until the sixth inning, when the Tigers bats came alive. Auburn loaded the bases and scored a run after a throwing error, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Branndi Melero then hit a sacrifice fly to score Emily Carasone to tie the game at 2-2.
The Tigers had tied the game, but their bats weren't ready to be quieted in the sixth.
Jade Rhodes put the Tigers ahead with a three-run blast to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
"Jade has really come on as a hitter," Myers said. "She wanted to put a good swing on the ball and she did. That's the definition of a home run. It's the by-product of a good swing."
The Tigers clinched their 28th win when Lexi Davis closed out the 7th inning without giving up any runs. Davis' save setup the win for Marcy Harper, who remains undefeated with a 13-0 record.
Auburn's 28-4-1 record is now the best start in program history.
The Tigers close out their three-game series with Mississippi State tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field.
