No. 20 Auburn men's golf team tied for third at the Carpet Capital Collegiate this weekend in Dalton, Georgia after shooting 5-under 283 to open the 2014-15 season.
The Tigers shot 6-over par, 294 at The Farm Golf Club on the first day of play. It put the Tigers in 10th place going into the second round.
Four birdies from Auburn's Dan Stringfellow tied the senior for 18th with an even-par 72. Sophomore Matt Gilchrest had four birdies also, putting him at 1-over for the day and tied for 24th.
Junior Jake Mondy shot a 2-over 74 and tied for 35th. Junior Michael Johnson tied for 43rd with a 75, while sophomore Ryan Benton tied for 52nd at 76 with sophomore Will Long.
Gilchrest and Benton contributed a pair of 66's and the Tigers shot 13-under, 275 as a team to tie for first place after the second round on Saturday. The Tigers' 13-under on Saturday is tied for the sixth lowest single round score in school history.
Gilchrest's seven birdies helped him jump from a tie for 24th to fifth at 5-under 139. Benton did not record any bogeys with his 66, and had six birdies for the day and moved up from a tie for 52nd to a tie for 16th at 2-under 142.
Teeing off Sunday's final round in the No. 1 spot, the Tiger's finished the tournament tied for third after shooting 5-under 283 with Gilchrest and Benton in the top 10.
Auburn (283-852) finish tied with Kennesaw State (283-852) at 12-under and a stroke ahead of No. 1 Alabama (284-853) with some help from Gilchrest, Benton and Mondy each scoring an eagle on the par-5, 12th hole.
Gilchrest tied for fourth in the tournament at 7-under 209, while Benton tied for 10th at 4-under 212, each shooting 2-under in the final round. Michael Johnson had an even-par 72 to finish tied for 29th at 1-over. Mondy, Stringfellow and Long all tied for 32nd at 2-over 218.
Auburn's is set to play again at the Primland Collegiate Invitational in Dan, Virginia on September 29-30.
