Despite junior Tra'Cee Tanner's second double-double of the year, the Auburn women's basketball team fell 56-49 against No. 25 St. John's Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind by as much as 17 near the end of the first half, Auburn (7-3) surged to within three points on two occasions, but couldn't close the gap.
The Tigers pulled to within 40-37 with 13:04 left in the game, but the Red Storm (10-0) extended the lead back to 10 late in the game. Auburn increased the pressure on defense and was able to get within three points again, but a late basket with 50 seconds remaining and a couple of ensuing free throws put the game out of reach.
Tanner led the way for the Tigers with 12 points and 10 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive glass. Sophomore Khady Dieng contributed 12 points of her own, hitting five of eight shots.
Auburn will face either Indiana State or SMU at 11 a.m. CT Sunday, depending on the outcome of Saturday's second game.
