Auburn knocks off Mississippi State, Advances to second round of SEC Tournament

For the first time since 2009, Auburn will be playing on the second day of the SEC Tournament.

Coach Bruce Pearl’s first season will last for at least one more day, as his Auburn Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak by knocking off the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 74-68, behind 56 combined points from K.C. Ross-Miller, K.T. Harrell, and Alex Thompson.

Ross-Miller poured in 21 points, Harrell added 19, and Thompson scored 16, a career-high for the sophomore.

Auburn fell behind early, but Harrell pulled the Tigers within two at the half with a three-pointer right at the buzzer. Bruce Pearl’s squad opened the second half on a 22-9 run to build an 11-point lead, but Mississippi State rallied quickly to pull ahead 61-59 with 7:09 left in the game.

From that point on, Auburn outscored the Bulldogs 15-7 — with Harrell’s layup with 3:45 to go giving the Tigers the lead for good — to keep the season alive for one more game.

The Tigers will play Thursday afternoon, March 12, against fifth-seeded Texas A&M, who they have not defeated this season, falling 71-61 at home in January, and losing 80-55 in College Station two weeks ago.
