A spirit that is not afraid

Auburn’s quarterback competition continues

There’s no shortage of questions for Auburn’s football team and coach Gus Malzahn to answer this spring. One of the more pressing issues has to be the dilemma over who will play quarterback next season.

So far as anyone can see, Junior Jeremy Johnson and redshirt freshman Sean White are the only two candidates for the starting position.

Malzahn addressed this issue after practice Tuesday, March 17, and said he’s pleased with the work they’ve shown.

“Jeremy and Sean are getting about equal reps,” Malzahn said. “They’re both competing for the job. For Jeremy, this is his third go-around, third year with us, so the expectations for him are extremely high.”

Johnson has amassed 858 passing yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions in two years with the Tigers. He is also the only quarterback on the roster with starting experience.

However, with a full year of experience, White could look to challenge Johnson. Malzahn recognizes the talent White possesses, but said he’s more concerned about them improving.

“Sean is a guy that’s been with us a year that has a lot of ability,” Malzahn said. “Right now they’re just pushing each other and that’s good.”

The answer for who will be quarterback has not been answered yet, but the Tigers have two talented candidates, along with freshman Tyler Queen.
