Schlottman named All-American

It was announced Thursday, June 11, Auburn men’s golfer Ben Schlottman was named Golfweek All-America honorable mention, the first freshman in school history to receive All-America honors.

Schlottman recorded the fourth-lowest stroke average in program history at 70.96 and also became the first freshman in school history to be named first-team All-SEC.

He was also named SEC Freshman of the Year and was the SEC Championship runner-up with an 8-under 67-65-70 for a total of 202. He had four top-five finishes in eight tournaments.

“I’m extremely proud of Ben,” said coach Nick Clinard. “He works very hard and deserves everything that comes his way. He is extremely gifted and talented. He does it with a purpose and has the best of both worlds.”

He was one of five Tigers to be named NCAA All-Southeast Region, one of only three teams in the nation along with No. 1 Illinois and No. 2 Texas to have five honorees.

“It is really special,” said Schlottman. “I worked really hard this year, and it is nice to see that hard work pay off. You always dream of playing really well in each event, but you don’t expect it to happen.”

Schlottman had a one-shot lead at the Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, South Carolina, Wednesday, June 10, after two rounds at 7-under, including a 6-under second round 64 on Thursday. There are two rounds remaining.

“I played really well (Wednesday) and didn’t make a bogey and putted really well and hit the ball really well,” said Schlottman. “It is nice to see preparation for the tournament pay off.”

Schlottman has a full summer schedule ahead, playing in the Swiss Amateur in Switzerland in two weeks, the Dogwood in Atlanta, the Players Amateur in Bluffton, South Carolina, the Cardinal in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the United States Amateur qualifier in Roswell, Georgia.
