Kizzire works through equipment malfunction on Day 1 of Barbasol Championship

Even the highest quality equipment breaks sometimes.

Former Auburn golfer Patton Kizzire learned this lesson the hard way on Thursday, July 16, at the Barbasol Championship in Opelika.

When he struck his drive off the par-5 13th tee, Kizzire immediately knew something “felt funny.”

After finishing his swing, Kizzire examined his driver and was surprised by what he saw.

“[I] looked at the face of my driver and it was cracked,” Kizzire said. “I've been using that driver for a while, so I travel with a spare, but it was in the house I’m staying at, which is right down the road.”

Fortunately for Kizzire, his family at the tournament was able to save the day.

“I had to get my mom and sister to go track it down and bring it back out,” Kizzire said. “I had to change out drivers and make sure with the rules official that it was all OK.”

Kizzire said the moments that followed the “odd” incident were nerve-wracking.

“It was kind of a hectic moment,” Kizzire said. “It actually only took about two holes for them to get it to me. They were right on it. I let them know that it was kind of urgent [because] I needed it before the par-5 16th.”

The Northridge High School product hopes to keep all of his clubs completely intact on Friday in the second round of the tournament at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National.

Kizzire will tee off on the first hole at 1:28 p.m.
