Auburns starts off road trip with win over Coppin State

Auburn tipped off its two-game road stretch in Baltimore Saturday, Dec. 19 with a 69-54 win against Coppin State University, which improved the Tigers to 8-2 on the year.

The Tigers started the game slowly with key mental errors and uncharacteristic miscues, but held a three-point lead heading into halftime. After the break, Auburn was able to wake up and break the game open by going on a 15-4 run to push the lead to 14 points.

The Coppin State Eagles rallied late in the third to cut the lead to nine, but the fourth quarter opened with an Auburn 9-0 run and an 18-point lead. Coppin State was never able to get within 14 points the rest of the afternoon.

Brandy Montgomery walked away with 24 points on the day, making this her fifth-straight game with 20 or more points. Montgomery scored 18 of her 24 in the second half as Auburn shot 52 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Tra’Cee Tanner came up second on the stat sheet in the scoring column with 16 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The Tigers' leading rebounder, Cabriana Capers, came off the bench to contribute eight rebounds to the teams total 35.

Katie Frerking was limited in scoring but found other ways to contribute by posting a career-high eight assists to go along with her six rebounds, block and steal.

The Tigers had some help from their defense, as they held Coppin State to 33.8 percent shooting.

Auburn resumes action Sunday in Towson, Maryland as they take on the Towson University Tigers at 1 p.m.
