Auburn brought its weekend road trip to an end Sunday, Dec. 20, with a 74-52 win against the Towson University Tigers.
Auburn picked up where it left off yesterday, coming out strong and energized. They ended the first quarter with a 21-13 lead and looked to be cruising to another victory.
Towson closed the gap midway through the second quarter to tie the game at 25-25, but the tie didn't last long, as the Tigers responded with a 7-0 run to end the half.
The third quarter started like the first since Auburn came out and jumped on top early. After a 7-2 run in the first 1 minute, 40 seconds, the lead was stretched to 15 points. The third quarter ended with Auburn holding a solid 13-point lead.
To start the fourth quarter, Auburn ripped off another 6-0 run to expand the lead to 19.
The Tigers never looked back and ended the game adding another tally to the win column.
The scoring was spread out among Auburn players, as star Brandy Montgomery had an off day and was held scoreless. Montgomery was able to rack up six rebounds and four assists to put her mark on the game.
Four different players scored in double digits: Tra’Cee Tanner, Katie Frerking, Jasmine Jones and Janiah McKay.
McKay was the star of the day, having the first breakout game of her college career. The freshman guard ended the game with a career-high 23 points and seven rebounds.
"That was a good day for Janiah," Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. "I told her at halftime, 'They're not guarding you. You are our scorer.' And it's been a little rough for her because she's been trying to do everything else. But today, they weren't guarding her, and we needed her to score. And she did.”
The Tigers move to 9-2 on the season, building on one of their strongest starts in school history.
Auburn resumes action Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. against George Mason University in Auburn Arena.
