Women's basketball falls to Marquette in overtime heartbreaker

The Tigers traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin this afternoon to take on the Golden Eagles of Marquette University. In what proved to be a thrilling back-and-forth game, Auburn came up short in overtime, falling 70-69.

Auburn led by as much as nine points in the 4th quarter, but a late run that consisted of three 3-pointers and a game-tying bucket with eight seconds left by Marquette pushed the game into overtime.

Despite Marquette’s efforts, the Tigers had opportunities to seal the game at the end from the free-throw line.

“Foul trouble, missed layups, we go 13-30 at the free-throw line, we gave the game away,” said Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. “It was our game so many times, we just gave it away. We had so many opportunities. It was ours to win, but we missed layups, and we missed free throws. That's the ballgame right there.”

In overtime, Marquette quickly pounced on the Tigers, taking a five-point lead, but after a Cabriana Capers layup the game was cut to one possession. After both teams went 1-2 from the free-throw line Marquette was leading 70-67 with 16 seconds in the game, but Auburn had possession.

Coming out of the timeout, no Auburn players could make a 3-pointer. Capers added a layup off of a missed attempt though, to cut the final margin to one point.

Auburn’s Tra’Cee Tanner and Brandy Montgomery were able to record double-doubles on the night. This was Montgomery’s second double-double of her career, while it was Tanner’s third of the season.

Montgomery led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 8-28 from the field.

Tanner was the second-leading scorer with 13 points, shooting 5-9 from the field. Both players recorded 12 rebounds.

As a team, Auburn shot a season-low 32.5 percent from the field and 13-30 at the free-throw line.

The Tigers are back in action against Winthrop at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the Auburn Arena.
