Auburn women's basketball upsets undefeated No. 7 Kentucky, 66-61

Auburn’s women basketball team moved to 11-3 Sunday, earning a big victory in the Auburn Arena against an undefeated No. 7 Kentucky team, 66-61. This marked the first time Auburn knocked off a top-10 team since the 2009-10 season.

The team overcame a 17-point deficit to notch its first win in the SEC (both teams entered the game 0-0 in conference play).

Although Auburn’s 3-point shooting was off (0-12 from behind the arc), the Tigers were able to capitalize on Kentucky’s 26 turnovers with 25 points.

Brandy Montgomery led the team in scoring, with 27 points in the final three quarters, and went 11-19 from the field. Montgomery also shut the door on the Wildcats with five clutch free throws to finish the game.

Tra’cee Tanner helped the Tigers out with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Katie Frerking added 15 points.

Kentucky’s Makayla Epps led the Wildcats’ scoring effort with 20 points.

Auburn takes on the No. 8 Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-1) next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Starkville, Mississippi.
