Softball takes down Boston College 5-1

There wasn't much style or flair on display for Auburn on Thursday night, Feb. 25, but a workman-like performance still put the No. 3 Tigers on top against Boston College, 5-1.

Auburn (11-1) managed just 7 hits on the night, but made its hits count, rarely wasting scoring chances. Boston College (4-7) nearly had as many hits as the Tigers, earning 5, but the Eagles' lone run came on a solo home run by Tatiana Cortez in the fourth inning.

The scoring began in the second inning, when a single by Victoria Draper sent Whitney Jordan home. Tiffany Howard hit an RBI double shortly after, sending Draper home and giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Jordan hit an RBI double to increase the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, a Courtney Shea sac fly made Auburn's lead 4-0.

Marcy Harper started at pitcher for the Tigers and earned her fourth win in five starts this season. After Cortez's home run cut into Auburn's lead, Harper was relieved by Kaylee Carlson, who allowed just one Boston College hit.

Later in the fourth inning, a double by Emily Carosone pushed Auburn's lead back to four, and the Tigers would never look back in the contest.

Auburn coach Clint Myers said he was happy with the win, but was disappointed by one aspect of the Tigers' performance.

"I thought we did a good job in the circle, we had some quality at-bats," Myers said. "The thing that killed us tonight was our baserunning. It was horrendous. We're not going to make an excuse. If you've got a uniform on, you've got to know things. We had some inexperience that clearly showed on the bases, and it's unacceptable."

Fortunately for Myers, Auburn's pitching was good enough to prevent the Tigers' poor baserunning from being a factor in the game.

"(Harper) moved (the ball) in and out," Myers said. "She changed the location. She changed the speeds. I think the way Kaylee came in and shut the door says a lot about her, as well."

Auburn will face Boston College again on Friday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field.
