The Auburn Tigers were able to coast to an easy win over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs for the second day in a row, this time by a score of 5-0.
After thrashing the Bulldogs 15-1 on Tuesday, Auburn took the field again Wednesday with hopes of leaving Plainsman Park on a high note as the Tigers head down to Florida to participate in the Cox Diamond Invitational.
This game proved to be a defensive battle as neither team could get their bats hot.
Auburn’s Andrew Mitchell had a sensational day on the mound, racking up career-highs across the board. Mitchell exited the game after striking out eight batters in six innings while allowing only 1 hit and no runs.
The offense finally opened up in the fourth inning when Auburn was able to get on the board.
Auburn pulled away in the fifth following an Anfernee Grier triple and a Jordan Ebert double to put three more runs on the board.
Grier ended his night with two runs scored, one hit, and two RBI. After being listed in the top five for RBI this season, Niko Buentello added one more to his résumé, giving him 20 through eight games.
“I think the shining point, you know I’m such a pitching guy, and I am always talking about how we need more and more," said Auburn coach Butch Thompson. "I think Andrew Mitchell is incrementally growing. He gave us five shutout innings last week and gets through six innings today. It really helps us when you play the Tuesday and Wednesday [games], and now you're about to go on the road and play opponents that are around a combined 21-2. It really helped to get a good start today.”
The Tigers leave for Florida on Thursday morning and play their first game Friday against Troy University.
The Tigers then play Michigan State on Saturday and Southern Mississippi on Sunday. The next home game for the Tigers will be March 8 against Georgia Tech at 4:30 p.m.
