A spirit that is not afraid

Women's tennis edges Tennessee

Auburn fought back from an early deficit to defeat Tennessee, 4-2, on Friday in Knoxville.

The Tigers failed to pick up the doubles point for the first time in SEC play. Andie Dikosavljevic and Paula de Man fell 6-3 to Tennessee's Kim Kermet and Brittany Lindl, while Alannah Griffin and Caroline Turner lost 7-6 to Tennessee’s Tiffany Tavares and Margo Taylor.

Pleun Burgmans and Alizee Michaud came back from down 3-1 to hand Tennessee's Sadie Hammond and Eve Repic their first SEC doubles loss of the season.

Turner, Griffin, Michaud and Burgmans won their singles matches to clinch the match for Auburn.

“A ton of credit goes to Tennessee for such a great fight,” said Auburn coach Lauren Spencer. “They came out and played with great intensity and in front a good home crowd. Today wasn't our best performance, but we somehow found a way to win."

The win moved Auburn, which is currently ranked No. 11 in the country, to 15-2, including 3-0 in SEC play.

With Burgmans' two wins, she now holds 177 combined singles and doubles wins in her career, leaving her nine shy of the program record for career wins.

"We escaped an upset on just pure grit and determination, and for that I am very proud," Spencer said. "We will need to really reset ourselves for a very tough battle against Georgia."

Auburn will travel to Athens to take on the No. 3 Bulldogs on Sunday.
