Auburn University Featured in New Documentary 'Spotlight on Agriculture'

Auburn University is a school known for it’s role in research and education in Agriculture and will be highlighted in an upcoming documentary ‘Spotlight on Agriculture’.

This series will be airing throughout this year and next in at least eight episodes.

“I believe this program can help people from all parts of the state understand the importance of agriculture here in Alabama, and can showcase the cutting-edge scientific research being done at Auburn to support the agricultural community,” said Roy Clem, executive director of Alabama public television. “It should appeal equally to the people growing and raising our food and the people who are eating it.”

The documentary will focus on Alabama as a whole in the agricultural industry. The first episode, featuring Auburn, will look at environmental stewardship.

“Our natural environment and resources give us the basic necessities of life—the food we eat and the water we drink,” said Paul Patterson, dean of Auburn’s college of agriculture and director of the Alabama agriculture experiment station.

Auburn University places a focus on water sustainability, conservation, and soil quality. These programs will be highlighted in the first episode of ‘Spotlight on Agriculture’.

“Sustainability is crucial, and that is a major focus for us at Auburn,” Patterson said.

Auburn aids students in their agriculture education by introducing programs in research and outreach and providing opportunities through the Alabama Agricultural Experiment station as well as the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

Auburn has a focus on sharing information with farms and communities as research is conducted, said Gary Lemme, director of the Alabama cooperative extension system at Auburn. In addition, Auburn is committed to conserving resources and researching for solutions.

“Auburn agriculture experts conduct sound, useful research and put it into the hands of those who can best use it,” Auburn President Steven Leath said. “We appreciate Alabama Public Television producing a series highlighting the role these reaches and the results of their hard work play in society.”

For interested students there will be a pre-screening of the episode in Mell Classroom 2550 at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. This event is open to the community and refreshments will be provided.

For those unable to attend, the documentary will air Monday, Feb. 5 at 9 p.m. CST.
